 (Senior) Device Engineer

Location: Daresbury, Warrington 

Salary: £40,000-£55,000

Role Overview 

Quantum Science (QS) have an exciting new opportunity for a (Senior) Device Engineer who will take a pivotal role in leading the research and development of colloidal quantum dot (CQDs) optoelectronic devices.

Main tasks and responsibility 

You will lead the research and development of short-wave infrared colloidal quantum dot photodetector technology. You will bring new ideas and concepts to the business and test and validate your ideas in devices. Product development of both materials and devices will be driven through your own knowledge and expertise to add to the technology advantage of the company.  


● Colloidal quantum dot optoelectronic device design and research 

Lead, plan, design, implement, analyse and draw conclusions from experiments 

Develop and implement fabrication processes for the devices 

Develop optical and electronic testing equipment and procedures for semiconductor devices 

Characterise materials and devices including infrared photodetectors made of nanomaterials and quantum dots 

Develop intellectual property to cover inventions including the writing of invention disclosures and patents 

Communicate and present results to internal and external stake holders 

 

Required skills 

Deep understanding of semiconductor device operation particularly in photodetection and image sensors 

Experience in running and maintaining device fabrication equipment including, thermal evaporators, e-beam, sputter coaters, spin coaters, glove box and clean room environments 

Hands-on experience and working knowledge of optical test equipment such as Lasers, LEDs, spectrometers, detectors, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc 

Materials and device data analysis and interpretation  

Familiarity with one or more of the following scientific/statistical software systems: Matlab, LabView (preferred), Python, JMP (preferred), Minitab 

Exceptional communicator, able to work as part of an interdisciplinary team, able to operate under own intuition

Education/experience 
PhD in relevant discipline (Physics, Engineering, or Materials science) 
● Proven competency in the industry developing semiconductor materials and devices
Hands on experience of colloidal quantum dot, perovskite or similar solution processed semiconductor materials and devices an advantage 
Proven track record of innovation with familiarity of patents and invention an advantage
