2024 finds Quantum Science at an exciting tipping point in its strategy. The expert in infrared quantum dot (QD) technology is progressing towards technology leadership status in the SWIR-sensitive nanomaterials sector, supplying the developing multi-billion-dollar market for SWIR devices. This growth would not have been possible without the leadership and expertise demonstrated across the business – in particular, by Chief Technology Officer Dr Cong-Duan Vo. Dr Vo has more than 20 years’ experience in materials R&D, surface chemistry, polymer and inorganic nanoparticle synthesis & functionalisation, quantum dots inks, formulations, and films, and has used the skills and knowledge he has acquired to guide Quantum Science through the last six years of growth.

As Quantum Science prepares for the next stage of its growth journey, it has recognised the importance of continuing its leadership development, and in giving back to the community by sharing its expertise with other local businesses. This is why earlier this year, Dr Vo took part in the Growth Catalyst Programme.
The Growth Catalyst programme is a part-Government funded project designed to help level up businesses across the Liverpool City region. It focuses on imparting leadership skills by connecting owners and managers with other individuals to improve their expertise. The two-day residential project was followed by business coaching courses, action learning, master classes in growth strategy, and essential skills workshops, as well as a business exchange programme.
From overseeing a multinational team comprising a wide range of specialist roles to coaching and mentoring employees on the intricacies of infrared QD technology development, Dr Vo has a great deal of experience of managing a complex organisation. He recognises that the key to success lies in empowering everyone to feel personally invested in the company’s vision and success.
“Working in such a specialist field has highlighted the importance to me of being adaptable and recognising different needs within the workforce – some people may desire independence; some may require more management,” said Dr Vo. “Clear communication, mentoring, and active listening have been key to this, letting me empower the team to take initiative where necessary with a full understanding of their role and duties.
“I hope the team sees me as a considerate leader who prioritises empowerment and education. I try to be seen as someone who does not just issue orders. Instead, I want to work with people to take them with me in working towards a common goal aligned with the company’s vision.”
